Autistic scholar Temple Grandin: ‘The education system is screening out visual thinkers’ | Autism | The Guardian

[18:18, 15/10/2022] Christopher Higgins: I didn’t read it like that, I thought that by early intervention she meant providing the child with support/making reasonable adjustments. She is indeed correct that pedagogy needs to change to accommodate the way a lot of neurodiverse minds work, that’s just a statement of fact. Think of the creatives like Blindboy who were cast in the rubbish bin in school because their mind style didn’t align with neurotypical exam-based education 🤷🏻‍♂️

I do disagree with her on functioning labels, she has missed the point here that neurodiversity is about leading the conversation on our rights. Perhaps that’s because she has been accepted into the mainstream for a few years now and thus her awareness of what it’s like being shut out of discussions surrounding autism has faded.

Her point about ‘slightly geeky kids getting labelled as ‘on the spectrum’ ‘ is replete with cognitive dissonance. On the one hand she wants to highlight the intellectual ability and creative mindstyles that many of us have, but by doing so she also risks furthering the autistic savant myth and therefore perpetuating functional labels
[18:21, 15/10/2022] Christopher Higgins: Actually, that’s an interesting point which might make a good blog: how do we talk about the value and power of autistic minds while avoiding the autistic savant myth? Many many blog posts and much of the positive media I see on autism aims to highlight that geniuses and artists throughout history were autistic, but often fall into the trap of putting us on a pedestal and reinforcing the Rain Man stereotype
